Movie Review by Zara
January 29th, 2007

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record

Read the book.

This was the first book of Weiner's that I read and is what got me hooked on her writing. I loved the book not so much for the writing style or the story but for the characters. I understood the pain of the older sister, her uncertainty, the doubt she had in herself. I wanted to hate her seemingly confident younger sister but ended up not being able to because you can really feel bad for her. I also preferred that there was more back story about the girls' mother and grandmother.

They put a lot of focus on Shirley MacLaine's character of the grandmother because MacLaine is a well known actress. In reality, there is very little to do with the grandmother and more to do with the relationship between the two sisters.

All of this said and done I had to ask myself: If I hadn't read the book and just watched the movie, would I have been able to enjoy it? Knowing all the other information that I knew about them (the movie is still fairly accurate in following along with the details about the sisters, I will give them that. They don't change anything about who they fundamentally are) I feel as if I had an upper hand in liking the movie. (Not that I entirely did.) If I knew nothing, how would I have rated it.

Maybe with 4 stars. But as it stands, I know what they left out. And I feel as if some of what was left out was important to the story.

Plus... Cameron is NOT Maggie. That's the part that bugged me the most.
