Movie Review by B Movie Ben

Do we really know someone?

I watched A History of Violence twice. Once by itself and once with the commentary. I wanted to watch it again, as it has captured my imagination like few movies. Watching Viggo Mortensen change back and forth from Tom to Joey was amazing. The subtle changes in his face as he changed roles is a tribute to his acting ability. But, it was Maria Bello that I really enjoyed, as she tried to come to grips with realizing the man she had loved for many years was not really the man she thought she knew. Ed Harris and William Hurt were also great, but when are they not.

The movie raises so many questions. Do we really know people, even after many years? Can people really change, or is there just a thin veneer of respectability over us waiting to be stripped away to revel our true self? And, what is this thing about women and bad boys?

So, I watched A History of Violence again today. It was just as good as the first two times. David Cronenberg directed this masterpiece to tell a compelling story and not waste a minute doing it.

I just saw the entire thing as being laughable. It's one of those movies that I will readily admit that I do not "get." And it's not a Cronenberg thing. I loved CRASH (no, not the Oscar winner) even though most people didn't "get" that one.

But, once again... Mario Bello was the best thing about this flick.

She's usually the best thing about any flick.

I firmly agree with that one.

I really enjoyed this film and both Viggo and Maria did a great job, but when it ended I was like is that it, I was totally left wanting more.....oooh I hate it when that happens.

Yes, I had a little trouble with the ending, too.
