The History of Sucking
I want you to keep something in mind as you read this. I enjoy violence. I like it served hot or cold, with a side dish of vengeance or grilled to a random perfection. I have no problem with blood, guts, gore, shooting, beatings or any other pleasant reminder that someone is in pain.
However, I was the one in pain during this flick. Agonizing pain.
I haven't read the graphic novel and after watching the movie I don't care to. What I wanted to figure out when I rented this flick was why there were so many people going on and on about how great it was. Often touted by critics as being one of the top 5 best movies of 2005, I needed to put it on my list of must-sees if only to be able to use it as comparison.
I watched it and kept asking myself "Um... when it this going to get better?" It took me a short amount of time to see it for what it was: A movie meant to give Cronenberg a reason to stick some realistic sex scenes in without being criticized about it.
See, I watched and enjoyed CRASH (no, not the Oscar winning movie), Cronenberg's ode to people who got off on car crashes and used them as means for sexual gratification. He was condemned at the time that movie was released, with people shouting that he was a sick f*ck for making it.
I'm all prepared for the people who will tell me that I just didn't "get" this flick. Fine by me. I guess I didn't get it. I'll tell you what I DID pick up on, though.
William Hurt, an Oscar award winning actor for his role in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, plays the long lost brother, a man at the head of a mob syndicate. He was nominated again for his role in this movie and I must say that he really is the best part of the movie. However, he's the best part because he plays his role for what it is: A JOKE.
You can see in his eyes that he thinks the movie and its story are asinine and that his character is just another cog in the stupid machine. So he plays it up in admirable style. Hell, you can almost hear him thinking: "When I'm done, I'll just go deposit my check and wash my hands of this."
I don't think he expected to have to come revisit it, case proven by his bored expression while sitting in the audience on Oscar night, looking back for the door.

| I was dissapointed with this one, Ed Harris dies to quick and Viggo was just not right for the role. Viggo to me is not a tough guy, should have been Val Kilmer. |
