I must be a raving bag of hormones.
I just watched this movie this morning. It is true that this is not an original idea, but this movie was really good, even if it was predictable. Let me 'splain for joo...
I have never really liked Reese Witherspoon. Dainty little women who are too cute and give off that "good girl does no evil vibe" have always annoyed me, and she certainly fits that bill. At least in my opinion. So it was refreshing to me that that which annoys me about her was used in a very good way by Mark Waters. He did a really good job of making her annoying, but also giving her a soul. Sure, there was a cheese factor to it, but how can you not have that in a story like this.
What I most enjoyed about this is that it was a journey. Two people who have lost a lot and cannot deal with society had meaning and connection with each other. They were thrust together by a common bond, but along the way were all sorts of traps waiting to pull them apart. Sure, the apartment was just a little too nice, and it was just a little too convenient that the guy was a landscape architect. But, hey it's a Romantic Comedy, would you have expected something else?
Jon Heder plays this guy who works at a bookstore and has a gift with spirits. This is the one thing that really keeps me from giving this review a 5 star. His role as Napoleon Dynamite was a moment in his career that has made him famous to a degree, but Mark Waters sort of pulled his lazy stoner-esque dude shtick into this movie for, what I can only imagine, must have been some half-witted attempt to make people say "Oh, I should like this movie better because I want to vote for Pedro", or something similar that would make people feel better about this movie because of a bad cliche. Maybe it worked for some people? I can understand someone's need to make some money as a professional too. I just hope Heder made enough to buy something that makes him feel good, because his "performance" only makes me feel bad.
Anyway, watch this movie when you feel vulnerable and emotional. It'll be worth it.
