Love Triumphs

Here is an Oscar worthy performance by Rachel Weisz. She glides on screen like an angel but with an intense swiftness of a hurricane. Rachel's rendition of Tessa got me. She came in strong from the start with naughtiness but without malice. She just believes and acts, yes without malice. Ralph Fiennes' Justin Quayle, has sheepishly agreed to welcome Tessa in his life. Justin is engulfed alive by the serpent of love. Who can resist her. No, not Justin, nor everybody else that crosses her path. She is after all a temptress and would not be afraid to use it to her benefit.

Rachel and Ralph explodes on screen with their romantic subtlety. Innately British, but perfected by this twosome. You see the connection of a husband and wife, in its natural splendor - hot , cold, lukewarm then back to hot.....all in one frame. With the artistic genius of director Fernando Meirelles (City of God), we see all these, in the course of time in mixed sequence, all seen in the memory of Justin piecing together life ala "21 Grams." Beautifully used was the use of the Computer video cam by Tessa and Justin for Point of View (POV). The device became a bridge in time to communicate with each other. Watching the home videos (memories) on screen was poigniant and gripping but instrumental in piecing the mystery at hand.

The controversy tackled in the story has muddled the lives of all the characters. They have been pitted against each other by this dilemna. Tessa was in the midst of everything, she was trying to do right, she knew everybody loved her and she used this to advance her cause. The bottom line is love. We try to solve the world's problem because of LOVE. In conclusion, it was effectively used as a subtext in this film, love bridges everything...

With a bigger budget and a choice of beautiful A List actresses ( choices were Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslett as Tessa ), Director Meirelles was blessed to have collaborated with these quality cast and crew to delve in the world of conspiracies and intrigue. The result is a sense titillation of great ensemble acting, (another Oscar Nomination worthy performance from Fiennes and Wiesz and kudos to the great supporting cast especially to Archie Panjabi and Danny Huston), cinema verite like cinematography and storytelling par excellence. A thriller of high caliber that will leave you loving not hating. The answer is in one self. In one's heart.

Note: the cast and crew as they saw the difficulty in Kenya has set up a Fund to help the Kenyan people, aptly called the Constant Gardener Trust which has already funded a much needed bridge, schooling costs, road building and community groups in East Kenya.
Again, love triumphs.
