I put off seeing this movie for the longest time. After all, Wedding Crashers had been similarly lauded by critics, but I thought that one was a terrible waste of money. But Apatow's The 40 Year Old Virgin is a different kind of sex comedy, vulgar but not crude and funny but not mean. The title virgin, Andy, is played with a certain sweetness and relatable awkwardness by Steve Carell that really makes the film. Carell, so great on The Daily Show and the American version of The Office, and who also co-wrote the film with Apatow, provides a certain depth to his character that most wouldn't have. Apatow and Carell have concocted an unusally clever sex farce, and here's to seeing more of them!
