How raunch should be done

I felt like revisiting a couple of Carell movies recently because I read this bit recently on how he seemed to be sliding too quickly into a comfy role of the non-offensive comedy actor.

I'd really like to point out that he's never really been all that offensive. This movie was supposedly the first one that showcased how dirty he could be, but if you look at it close enough it's Carell who is playing the good guy here, sweet and innocent while his heathen friends try to entice him into their slimy underworld.

Carell's character of Andy is afraid of women and even needs to romance himself into masturbation. How does that make him a raunchy actor just because he's involved in a movie that's raunchy overall?

I think the reason why this movie works so well and other wanna-be copycats like GOOD LUCK CHUCK don't is because you really are dealing with a nice guy character. Andy doesn't screw the women that his friends introduce him to as a way to soften himself up for the woman that he really loves (unlike Cook's character of Chuck who continues f*cking every woman who throws herself at him while he pines for another girl - I'm sorry, but that's what's TRULY offensive).

Men like to let everyone think that they're pigs and they'll act like they're pigs when they're around each other because they stupidly believe that's the image that they need to hold up. In reality, they're all a little more like Andy than they care to admit (or like Rudd's character of pining over the chick who didn't want him).

That's why I'll happily laugh through a raunchy movie like this one, enjoying and appreciating the over-the-top happy ending. Because you don't feel dirty for doing so.

Good points! I haven't seen Good Luck Chuck, because...well...I just didn't think it looked all that great and I'm too broke to waste my $10 going to see a disappointing movie. I really liked this flick. I really like Steve Carell too. It's nice to see the nice guy win sometimes. ;)

Yeah, GLC was pretty damn bad. Not that I was expecting it to be good or anything, but it exceeded my expectations. It was unbelievably degrading and crude to women.
