Movie Review by Melanie
January 29th, 2007

When you think about WWII, what comes to mind? Before seeing this movie, I would have said, NAZI's, Hitler, Europe, Japan, atomic bombs, Mousilini, Stalin...but the Philipines was not even close to the list.

When the Japanese attacked the Philipines it was bad. The ill prepared soldiers were forced to retreat to the Bataan Penensula. After months of fighting, the staring troups surendered to the Japanese. Ten's of thousands of American and Philipino troups were forced to walk the infamous Bataan Death March, and eventually were imprisoned. At times, they died at a rate of hundreds a day. When the Americans finally returned to Asia to fight the Japanese began executing the prisoners instead of handing them back to the Americans. Sorry for the history lesson, however I think it is important for really appreciating this movie.

This is the story of the 6th Ranger Battalion going over 30 miles behind enemy lines to rescue over 500 POWS. These men risked their lives to save prisoners they had never met.

The surrender at Bataan was one of the greatest defeats in American History, and the liberation of this camp was the single greatest victory. This movie restores my faith in mankind. It is very reasuring to know that there are true heros among us.

To anyone that has a love of history, get the two disc collector's series. The special features are just as good, if not better, than the movie.
