Movie Review by Scott
August 10th, 2005

This may in fact be the best superhero movie ever other then Batman & Batman Begins

Once again summer rears its ugly head and yet again another weekend has come & gone and no new movies that looked decent were released. So again I had to decide what I should watch and this time I decided on "Sky High" only because Dave Foley and Kevin MacDonald from the "Kids in the Hall" are in the film but honestly what I got was a big surprise.

"Sky High" is about a kid named Will (Michael Angarano) who's mom (Kelly Preston) and dad (Kurt Russell) are the worlds biggest superheroes. Will is about to attend his first year at Sky High which is where they train teenagers to become heros or sidekicks but Will has yet to discover what his powers are. As the film continues on we follow Will on his journey as he discovers his powers, fights evil, and gets through his first year at Sky High.

To be up front and honest about it, I never really had any interest in seeing this movie but now I am very glad I did. This movie could quite possibly be the best superhero movie I have ever seen outside "Batman" and "Batman Begins". I say this because the story is actually pretty original, not to mention the movie contains a good amount of action, comedy, and even a little drama. And to top it off, "Sky High" is also a great movie for both kids and adults alike.

The story in itself is interesting because it's something new for the genre which Hollywood has been milking dry for years now. It's about a family of superheroes and a superhero high school. This hasn't been done before and I think this is one of the main reasons that this film worked. Also the script contained some cleaver jokes poking fun of other movies in the same genre, for example when Will couldn't figure out what his powers were and Steve (Kurt Russell's character) was upset by it and he said "maybe we can dip him in some nuclear waste because that's how some people who don't have super powers get them." It's pretty witty because having watched almost every movie based on a comic book; most characters do get their powers based on this. I really thought the script was fresh and well written.

The acting on the whole was very well done for a comic book/superhero movie. Kelly Preston and Kurt Russell did a fine job as both mom and dad and as superheroes. I also really dug the main character Will, I think Michael did a great job on the role; his performance was believable and sincere. Danielle Panabaker who played Layla also did a wonderful job and played a very likable yet realistic character. Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played Gwen did a terrific job as well and played a great character (not to mention she is also extremely hot). Personally my favorite characters were the cameo appearances by Dave Foley and Kevin MacDonald who both played teachers at Sky High; both of them were very humorous.

Director Mike Mitchell did a great job on this film and this is probably his best film to date. Also considering the decent cast and the amount of special effects in the film, he did a lot with the film on a 30 million dollar budget which seems to be extremely low nowadays for a film like this. I think Mr. Mitchell also did a great job capturing the characters feelings and emotions as well as a great job filming the shots of the high school antics.

In Conclusion this movie could quite possibility be the best superhero movie ever made outside "Batman" and "Batman Begins". It delivers an original story and great characters. The film is a great popcorn flick that both children and adults alike can enjoy. It's really is one of this summer's biggest surprises because I never thought it would be good and so far its one of my favorite mainstream summer films. I highly recommend it to all especially those who enjoy comic book or superhero movies.

MovieManMenzel's final rating for "Sky High" is an 8/10.
