Movie Review by Zara
January 29th, 2007

Ya know what?

I liked this film.

Colorful like a comic book, which is important considering that the characters have comic book superhero and villain powers, the movie was marketed at the 'tweens. Those are the kids who make whatever HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is popular. That set of kids who aren't quite little kids and aren't quite teenagers.

Usually fodder for that set is syrupy sweet and supremely boring for anyone over the age of 15. This one is still sweet, still well-intentioned, but it also takes its mission lightly. The actors have fun in a way where they play their roles honestly but seem to have a lot of fun mocking them in the process. True, the kid actors are a lot more sincere in their acting, but watching Kurt Russell have a blast as the super dad and Kelly Preston as the super mom is a joy that surpasses having to watch the SPY KIDS movies again.

One of the things that it fun is seeing all of the different super powers that they could come up with for the kids. They also include figuring out which ones get to be heros and which ones get to be sidekicks. (Which makes me have to mention Dave Foley who adds such a subversively black sense of humor to the flick it's tantalizing.)

In the end, you haven't learned anything, but you've been entertained. Sometimes that's all you can hope for with a film of this genre.
