Disney's live-action movie "Sky High" centers around a family of superheroes. There's the father, Steve Stronghold, AKA The Commander (Kurt Russell) who has the power of super strength; the mother Josie Stronghold, AKA Jetstream (Kelly Preston) who has the power to fly, and the son Will Stronghold, AKA...Will (Michael Angarano) whose superpower is...well...he doesn't have any.
Will is too ashamed to tell his parents that he doesn't have any superpowers, since they're always boasting about what a great superhero he will be. They even send him to a school designated for superheroes, known as Sky High (I really enjoy the tongue-in-cheek title).
While at the superhero academy we're introduced to several people including Will's childhood friend Layla (Danielle Panabaker) who has possibly the most original superpower in the movie - she can control nature. Other than that we got the traditional (yet sometimes warped) superhero powers: Ethan (Dee Jay Daniels) who can turn to water, Magenta (Kelly Vitz) who is a shapeshifter - but can only shapeshift into a hamster, and Zach (Nicholas Braun) who can illuminate himself.
At the school there's two classes you could be in - superhero, or sidekick. All of Will's friends are sidekicks, and when Will goes to take the superhero test he fails because he doesn't have powers and is labeled as a sidekick by Coach Boomer (Bruce Campbell) who can shout with sonic blasts.
Sky High is perfect for teenagers because it brings the struggles of high school into a cool superhero covering. What kid in high school could say they never struggled with fitting in? Or say they had enemies? Will's enemies include Penny (Malika) who can multiply, Lash (Jake Sandvig) who can extend his body, Speed (Will Harris) who can...well...be fast, and Warren Peace (Steven Strait) who can manipulate fire (Pyro...).
And also in high school there's the struggle for love. Will is falling for senior Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who can manipulate metal. While he pins for her, Layla pins for him, and makes the most blatent advances, but he's so seduced by Gwen he doesn't notice. That serves as the main focal point of the movie - besides Will trying to discover his powers and the fact that someone wants to 'take care' of Will's parents.
A very good movie. Especially if you're younger, or have younger people in your family.
Layla: What's embarrasing him in front of the entire class going to prove? That is so unfair.
Will Stronghold: Yeah, well if life were to suddenly get fair, I doubt it would happen in high school.
