One of The Best In The Remake World!
Steven Spielberg has not only created a perfect remake to a great movie, but has created a great science fiction movie. Steven has been none for huge special effects in movies and great character stories. War of The Worlds adds great special effects, amazing character stories and amazing directorial styles to make an intense film, visually and emotionally.
Ray (Tom Cruise) is a divorced father working a dead end job and missing both his kids. When both his kids, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin) get to come over his house for visitation, a storm rocks behind Rays house, but somethings different with this storm. They begin to notice that the lightning is striking in one place more then once. After the storm ends, Ray goes out to find this spot, along with the rest of the town. All of a sudden, the ground shakes and a tripod comes out, vaporizing people and buildings. Ray and his kids run away, trying to escape the invasion. He must protect his family, but also try to figure out who he is.
Tom Cruise has worked with Steven before on the excellent Minority Report. Playing as a father figure in War of The Worlds, he nails the role with perfection. Showing a lot of care with his kids and showing us the personal fears through his acting. Dakota Fanning does a pretty good job in here, playing the 10 year old turning 30. Justin Chatwin puts on a pretty convincing performance, playing an emotional role plus a fearful role.
The directorial style of Steven is used with handhelds cameras and huge wide shots. The coloring of this movie is different, the lights are very bright and the darks are very dark.
The visual effects in the movie are excellent. There are plenty of huge effects shots like the tripods and plenty of other explosions and everything.
Bottom Line: Big, Powerful and Action Packed.
