I really enjoy films like this. The kind where a really good director, some great actors (Dakota Fanning), a fabulous script (H.G. Wells), and the funds for the right special effects all come together.
Especially when they, apparently, don't have someone there to say, "Why THE F**k are they buried in the ground?!"
Why, in God's good name, would the aliens come ALL this way just to BURY their machines, so that millenia later they could conquer our world? Why wouldn't they just do it THEN?! Why all the digging and the waiting?!
Ya know why?! Cus SOMEONE can't stick to a script that has ALREADY been a classic for like 50 years!!
Goddamnit Spielberg! Why did you have to go and do that? Why the F**k are they BURIED in the ground??!!!! Huh?!! WHY! It's stupid! It doesn't make any goddamn sense!! RAAAHHHHH!!!!!
