John and Jane Smith are a normal married couple, living a normal life in a normal suburb, working normal jobs...well, if you can call secretly being assassins "normal". But neither Jane nor John knows about their spouse's secret, until they are surprised to find each other as targets! But on their quest to kill each other, they learn a lot more about each other than they ever did in five (or six) years of marriage.
Director Doug Liman had more success with Bourne Identity then he surely had for Jumper, but in between came Mr and Mrs Smith, with more mixed reviews rather then being a majority of positive and negative. Just like The Bourne Identity, we get another spy type thriller with more of a comedic spin. As it was released just before the summer film season, Mr and Mrs Smith in my thoughts, was a great way to kick it off. We get great acting from our two lead roles, Angeline Jolie and Brad Pitt, plus a funny but smaller role from Vince Vaughn. There is plenty of humor which is helped by the fact that Angeline and Brad are currently together, which helps make some of the arguments between the two a little bit more funny. And we cant forget that this is an action movie and there is plenty of action, and for an action/comedy, its actually very well done.
So basically, John and Jane work for two completely seperate spy corporations. While John works out of an actual office with a fold out type computer and all that, Jane is placed in a completely technologized environment where computers run everything, almost. Well since their spies, they cant blow their cover by telling eachother, that just about doesnt work out. So when they find out the truth, they go on a rampage inside their own house which includes destroying it and a little break up in between. Brad Pitt has to be the most well known actor of all time because I never met one person who doesnt know him, which actually gets me angry because I like to see bigger budget movies with lower rated stars, just because it gives the world a film a chance to get another up and rising star. Angeline Jolie runs right besides him with her usual sexy mood and she does it all right, which even includes a strange scene showing her love for fetish. Do they work out together, yes they do. And like I said before they have that kind of love/hate relationship both in and outside of this movie so it evens it all out. Vince Vaugh makes a mild but funny appearence here as Johns best friend. His girlfriend gives him a curfew and he tries to help John, but things always go wrong so yeah, that just about sums it up.
One of the more positive aspects of The Bourne Identity was the way that Doug Liman built suspense, and followed immediately with in your face fight scenes. Now this worked really great with that movie, but with Jumper, Doug seemed to concentrate just on action, so it ended up making the film very negative from just about everybody. In the middle lies this movie, so while it has almost no suspense (which is taken over by comedy) and has tons of action, the movie lies mixed with the critics. Now I do like the fact that there is a lot more humor followed by in your face action, but the story and characters make that build up worthwhile. The car chase scene makes a fine example of how Doug handles the action and Brangelina work together to make the scene funnier. The end action scene is huge, which is usual for a movies climax but this one really put itself out there.
Mr and Mrs Smith is sexy and action packed comedy, with some action, oh and did I mention comedy?
