The best animated film of 2005, this is not as good as Hayao Miyazaki's previous effort, Spirited Away, but it's close. The title character (because the castle truly is as important a character as any of the people or creatures in the film) is a visual masterpiece, as are all of Miyazaki's films, and the fairy tale-like story shows an imaginitiveness that is sadly missing from most mainstream American family films, with Miyazaki's trademark social commentary subtly worked in.
