Movie Review by Seth C
January 16th, 2006

Going into this badly dubbed French horror flick, I had high hopes that this would be the scary movie I had waited all year, if not all my life, to see. I'm not usually into horror flicks due to the lack of realism they tend to usually have, however I felt really positive about "Tension" because of what I had seen through clips or read on web site postings. The idea of a women trying to escape a psychophatic killer intrigued the hell out of me because it seemed if the basis of the film had been dipped in realism. It could happen. It HAS happen. So, with this in mind, I forgave the beginning of the film that was filled with decapitation, masturbation and lesbian infatuation and settled in for what I was hoping to be 2005's most tense filled perfect, or slightly perfect at least, film. The first hour or so of the film is superb. The music they use is so quiet and pitch perfect that it makes the visions of the unfolding story on the screen that much scarier and brilliant. However, it's after that first wonderful hour or so in when they throw us the twist ending that we just knew was coming. I won't ruin the ending for you here, however I will say it's one of those twist ending so absurd, you really just have to see for youself. Who thought that this film's ending was a smart move - Nothing about this film's ending is smart. Trust me, you'll agree. I don't know about you, but I am sick to death with the stupid twist endings filmmakers have been lazily throwing our way lately. From "The Village" to "Hide and Seek," it makes you wonder how many times Hitchcock has turned over his grave. "High Tension" could have been the perfect example of a horror film that succeeds in believability and scares, however sadly all it shows us is how badly a twist ending can fail an already perfectly made film.
