horror retention
just when i thought the horror industry was in dire need of some great assistance, aja delivered the goods which saves the near lackluster genre. in fact, he delivered them so well the film garnered an NC-17 rating which is quite impressive. thankfully, we are able to get this unedited version on dvd. high tension has all the great elements which make a perfect suspense thriller or even great pyshcological horror masterpiece. there's gore, edgy terror-filled scenes, & even repressed sexuality which works very well.
our film starts off with the lead awaking from a brutal nightmare in which she's, running in the woods albeit very bloodied & obviously in need of emergency help. when awake, we find her riding with a friend & she tells the friend how she's always running from herself. thus, begins the journey through hell as seen by victim & killer simultaneously. for the next 90 minutes, we are plunged into a realm of utter horror & near breakneck suspense as one girl tries to fend off a psychopath who slaughters her friend's entire family & then proceed to kidnap her friend as well.
aja obvsiously is no stranger to this style of film-making & i can see a huge future in movie making already in this one debut alone. i could've done without the twist ending but overall i'm impressed. the summer of 2005 saw horror emerge once again as triumphant with high tension, devil's rejects & land of the dead. when it comes to being scared, aja knows what frightens you.
