Hirsch Looks So Much Like Jay, it Hurts

I'm an old school skater chick. I used to roll with the boys, grinding up the steps in front of the abandoned Pt Mugu Theater, eating sidewalk and wandering around in search of the next stretch of steps or ridiculously long handrail to conquer.

Watching LORDS OF DOGTOWN, I swear there were moments when I broke out in tears. While the movie features some of the main players from a generation before mine and I wasn't feeling nostalgia for the time period portrayed in the flick, it still brought back all of those memories of high school and my buddies. Many of the guys were hardcore fans of the original set of concrete warriors, with Tony Alba being a huge focus for more than a couple of them. Seeing how far they could push their boards and their egos whenever we'd hit a competition was a sight to behold.

While there really was no need for this movie considering that Stacy Peralta (one of the original members of the Z Boys) made an excellent documentary on those days (I highly recommend checking out both films together), this is a perfect complimentary piece. Directed by the woman who brought us the intense flick THIRTEEN, it is a bare bones reflection of what it was like to grow up in a time and locale where the only riches there were to be found were in the afternoon sunlight and the vast stretches of pavement to dive into.
