Movie Review by Seth C
October 19th, 2006

Lords Of Dogtown is actually probably a better film then I'm giving it credit for, however I won't know for sure until I view it again.

The film starts off rather slow and the script seems somewhat weak and jumbled until at least thirty minutes into the film when we finally realize which three of these 'z-boys' were going to be the film's main focus and why. Catherine Hardwicke shoots another beautiful looking film about wild times in the lives of youth - her previous film being Thirteen which is arguably a must-see film for the performances alone - with a script by Stacey Peralta, who just so happens to be one of the main characters in Dogtowns story. And I think props has to be given to Peralta for not making himself or his own story the main character/storyline of this feature. Instead, the Peratla character is the least seen of the three, while the Jay Adams and Tony Alva pieces take center stage.

I always love to see films about the destruction of bandmates/best friends because it always seems so sad. Yet it also is always very relatable because we've all gone through the loss of friendships because of the change of who we was were at a certain point in life. Truly, that's the centerpiece of this film with skateboarding being just the purpose for the story.

Also, Emile Hirsch, who plays the rebellious Jay Adams, gives a flat-out perfect performance in this film and has me believing that he may just be the next DiCaprio ... seriously, you'll just have to see it for yourself.
