I didn't think I'd like it
This was one of those sappy looking movies about young women and the stupid sh*t that they have to go through. My mom insisted on getting it, having fallen in love with America Ferrera after seeing her in REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES. Since that movie didn't impress me as much as it seemed with everyone else, I was hesitant. I also find Alexis Bledel to be a waste of a movie paycheck, bringing nothing but wide blue eyes to the screen and lines delivered in an empty-headed monotone.
Yet I ended up really liking this movie. America is sharp and you feel for her character, the daughter of parents who've split up and the new potential step-mom is a tight assed b*tch. (And of course, she doesn't see much of her dad, he's just too involved in his own life.) I could really feel for her situation even though I've personally never had to go through it.
But it was Amber Tamblyn as the grungy of the girls who I liked best, having a young girl come into her life who she first considers a pest and then grows used to. The relationship between the two of them is extremely touching and the ending of that relationship did bring me to tears.
I also liked the character of Jenna Boyd, the runner who lost her mother to cancer at an early age. The handling of how she hooks up with the guy while at a training camp for soccer is done well, even if they muck it up by giving it a rosy ending. (Although I suppose there might be nice guys like that out there somewhere.)
It's made for women and I doubt many guys will be into it, but for the audience that it was intended for, it does a great job.
