Movie Review by Zara
December 14th, 2008

While there are portions of this movie which are (expectedly so) stupid and the fact that the movie is built mainly on the whining of Chris Rock's zebra character who wants to get out of the zoo and Ben Stiller's lion character who loves being the central attraction there, this movie does what it needs to do to be a successful family film. It is brainless when it needs to be, heartwarming (even if it feels forced) when it needs to be and has plenty of potty humour for the kids to snicker at.

What I loved about the first movie is what the filmmakers caught onto for the sequel, banking instead on the parents rather than the kids in getting people to come back and that would be the smaller characters. The ninja-trained penguins who take over the boat that the animals are being shipped to their homeland in, the lemurs who inhabit the island of Madagascar and even the sign language speaking monkeys who get much more screen time in the sequel than they did here. Those are the wink-wink, nudge-nudge parts that kept the parents' attention and helped to inspire the second incarnation of the film. Trust me, it's gracious of them for doing so.

A good, if not great, movie to watch with younger kids. Not something I'd be prone to sit and want to watch again by myself, but a decent breakfast cereal of a film for the kiddos.
