Rogue Pictures' Unleashed
"Unleashed" or known internationally as "Danny The Dog" might not please die-hard Martial Arts fans going in expecting non-stop Martial Arts scenes after another. But for those looking for something a little different, with some top-notch actors, mixed with breathtaking fight choreography by the man who helped The Matrix Films and the Kill Bill's with their fight scenes will go home happy. Not to mention some real depth full drama scenes.
Jet Li who can play a real tough and mean guy in some of his previous movie roles gives a sympathetic and quiet performance as Danny. Who was trained since he was little by evil mob boss Bob Hoskins to kill, attack, and hurt people. He has trained Danny in the same shape as a dog. He has a collar and when the collar comes off, he turns into a killer. Collar stays on, he is a similar to a dog. Eats like a dog, sleeps like a dog, and does dog like things.
You might ask how this could have occurred and how it does happen. Well, as Burt (Bob Hoskins) states if you get them young enough, and train them young enough, you can get them to do almost anything you want. A little bizarre, yes, but I accepted it and bought into it. If you can accept and deal with the bizarre plot and accept it for it's total strangeness, then you can enjoy this film. If it's just too bizarre, and too odd to follow, you might find yourself not getting into this film.
Jet Li in Rogue Pictures' Unleashed
I like to suspend a little disbelief with the movies and I got into and followed the whole man is a dog plot line. Some might not be able to. But the performance by Jet Li is so sympathetic, simple, quiet, and lovable, you can't help but get into it for what it is.
Jet Li meets a blind piano tuner played by Morgan Freeman who takes him in with his step daughter and they treat him with kindness, warmth, and love. Morgan Freeman and his step daughter have something missing in their family and so does Danny, so the trio of them is a perfect fit. Morgan Freeman is giving the type of performance he always does. The wise, lovable, kind, and caring loyal friend. But who better then Morgan Freeman to give it?
The reason this movie sets itself apart from your typical noisy, loud, and violent Martial Arts movie is it has a real heart. The violence is just a back drop for what in reality is a sweet character study of a person trying to make a new life despite what he has been around for his whole life. Danny does not fight and kill because he enjoys it and wants to. He fights because he is put in situations by the evil Burt where if he does not fight back, he will die. So he only fights because it's a survival method.
Jet Li and Morgan Freeman in Rogue Pictures' Unleashed
The movie uses theory and builds up to the violence, which is only used when it is needed to further the story and the characters. It is never unnecessary or too much. The violence means something and is a whole heck of a lot of fun to watch. With bone crunching limbs breaking, bodies flying it's visual martial arts poetry.
Finally, they get it right. The violence means so much more when it is built up by good story telling, a really good, good guy (Jet Li), an evil bad guy (Bob Hoskins), and when it is used to further the story.
"Unleashed" is a lot of fun to watch.
