Monster-in-Law (2005)

You know how sometimes, you just want to watch a mindless, unchallening movie that provides an entertaining, but easily forgettable, 90 or so minutes? That's what I was looking for when I rented Monster-in-Law this weekend. Mindless it is, but entertaining it is not. When this came out, it was accompanied by much fanfare over Jane Fonda's return to the movies. I can't understand why she agreed to be in this.
Jennifer Lopez plays Charlie, a young woman looking for love, with the requisite two best pals cheering her on. She has about a dozen jobs, for no forseeable reason. And then she meets and falls in love with a handsome surgeon, Michael Vartan, and whee, they're in love, after some requisite stupid misunderstandings. And then the perfect man's mom Viola (Jane Fonda) loses her high-powered, Barbara Walters-esque job, has a breakdown, and with all her free time grows obsessed with proving Charlie isn't good enough for her baby boy.
There are basically no redeeming qualities in this film. It made me laugh maybe twice. It doesn't make any sense. If you love J. Lo, it could be enjoyable, but there are many other mindless yet entertaining movies of far better quality if that's what you're looking for.
