Movie Review by Suzanne
April 5th, 2008

Reaction Time.

Mysterious Skin. Ive had this on my queue since December 2007 when i opened my Netflix account. I came across it, read the description and added it instantly. I didnt watch the preview and I dont think there was one when I had added it. When I finally decided to watch it I did not recall the synopsis and thought I was going to see a movie based on drugs. I can be so naive. Here is the descrption from Netflix:

"Gregg Araki's riveting drama, based on a novel by Scott Heim, brings together two unlikely heroes (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet): a young man who makes a living by selling his body on the streets and another who's convinced he was once abducted by aliens. It seems they have unspeakable tragedy in common as both of them discover they were abused as children. What results is a friendship built on despair but rife with hope."

Sometimes I intuit with a movie that im not ready to watch it. I dont know why. Then I put it off until finally theres some reason that draws me back to it. My eagerness to know more about Indie film. First reaction: Repulsion, but I knew it would play itself out. After being introduced to young Neil & Brian, I believe they flash forward to 1991? Gordon-Levitt smoking a butt on the swingset, and im thinking, "God he looks alot like Heath. Nice bone structure, those Aquarian men." He is magnetic in this role. Come to think of it, he reminds me a lot of Corin Nemec in "I Know My First Name is Steven." That same unfeeling blankness mixed with escapism.

I didnt start getting worried until Wendy, Michelle Tractenberg, starts warning Neil
to play it safe. Fast forward to THAT PART. If you've seen it you know what im
talking about. I was laying resting on my arm and immediately sat up knees to chest because I was so nervous. After Drago I thought Neil had wised up, geez. I didnt shed a tear until the closing scene. That last quote by Neil it got to me. "And I thought of all the grief and sadness and f$$ked up suffering in the world, and it made me want to escape. I wished with all my heart that we could just leave this world behind. Rise like two angels in the night and magically... disappear."

I started watching the Special Feature about the book readings. Its funny because I got so lost in Brady Corbet as Brian, that when I saw him in real life, I realized what an amazing job he did. They all did.
