Movie Review by Zara
May 31st, 2007

Gregg Araki is the man

The movie that started a tidal wave, bringing the underbelly of Hollywood, that portion where a good deal of hipsters like to hang out and declare that they were the first ones to discover something good about certain actors, together and make Levitt their new god.

Here's the thing. I've watched PICKING UP THE PIECES. While it wasn't something that he had a big role in, little Joey had hints of being more than just that little kid from Third Rock in him. So let's get past that point, shall we?

This is a depressing movie. It's not meant to solve any problems or make light of anything for anyone. It tells a bleak tale and ends on a down note, one where you are unable to determine if the lead characters are ever going to find their happily ever after.

The likelihood is that they're not. And that's why I love this movie as much as I do. Normally movies of this type will end on some kind of positive spin, letting everyone off the hook for what happens to victims of child abuse. In reality, most never recover. Most go on and lead their lives the way that they are destined to, but skewered by the ache that goes along with having had their souls ripped from them at such a young age.

I love that the movie isn't palatable for most people. I hope that more people watch it and get that awful feeling of dread in their lower stomach. I hope people are disgusted by the movie and feel that it's depressing simply for the sake of being depressing.

Because you know what? Child abuse should NEVER have some kind of happy ending. It's not about that. It's about surviving. But happiness in the classic definition is killed the moment a child is taken advantage of. No amount of Hollywood glitter should ever try to cover that reality up.
