"House of Wax" does not lead us down any roads we have not been down before. It is a basic formula of stupid teenagers making insane mistakes until they are mostly all dead. A formula that has been in countless horror movies before it. But what makes this one stand out is some good performances by Chad Michael Murray and Elisha Cuthbert, a big budget and extremely cool looking set to it, which was built just for the movie, and it knows what it is and has some fun with it and does not try to be anything it is not. "House of Wax" starts off by showing two twins. One of which is well behaved and sitting in his spot. The other is out of control, crazy, and must be tied down to his chair.
We are unsure what all of this means at the start, but it makes more sense as the story and movie unfold into the second hour. We then get taken to a local fast food joint with our group of teenagers. Along for the ride is Robert Ri'chard from "Coach Carter" fame. Paris Hilton is also along for the ride as his girlfriend. Robert plays the horny black guy, while Paris plays his all so eager girlfriend. Elisha Cuthbert is there as well, her brother is an ex-con played well by Chad Michael Murray, plus her boyfriend played by Jared Padalecki from "Gilmore Girls" fame.
Rounding out this group is Jon Abrahams. We get some back story's such as Elisha going away to New York to college and unsure how this will affect her relationship with Jared. Chad Michael Murray is the hard ass ex con who only really gets along with Jon. But none of those are really important or needed, as a good chunk of them will be killed off later on in the movie. Which is what we expect.
The group of college bound teens take a trip out to see a football game. They get tired from all the driving and decide to camp out overnight. Big mistake. The first mistake of many. They end up in a creepy looking area that has a horrible smell. Yet, these geniuses decide to still stay overnight. Even after they anger a local creepy by breaking his headlight. The mistakes are multiplying by the minute in this movie. Oh, did I mention this place they are camping overnight is so obscure, it is not even located on their GPS?
Maybe there is a reason for that. They wake up and find out that one their cars is missing a fan belt. But they don't want to miss the football game. While they are thinking about what to do, Elisha decides, hey you know what, let's follow that stinking smell that has been smelling since we arrived. Paris Hilton makes the comment of the movie saying "yes, let's follow the smell", in a sarcastic tone. They follow the smell and Elisha falls into the pit of rotting corpses.
Ah, now they know what that damn smell is. Logic would say to get out of that place promptly, but instead they run into another local creepy who decides to give them a ride to get a fan belt. Okay. You are going to get a ride from a man in this town, who was near the pit of rotting corpses? Talk about stupidity. They then have more enough of the local creepy and decide to walk. Then they end up in the town and find a place called "House of Wax".
Where yes, you guessed it ... everything is made of wax. We then go back and found out traffic is too bad, so the other gang decides to go back to the camp out. Since Paris and her boyfriend want to get freaky, Chad and Jon must go out looking for Elisha and Jared, the lovely couple who have now made their way to the gas station looking for the fan belt. We are then treated to a Paris Hilton strip tease, which I enjoyed very much. If only she got completely nude I would have enjoyed it even more.
This is a fun movie. Paris Hilton got a lot of negative press for her performance in this movie, but I'll be the first to say, she did fine. She was suppose to a portray a screaming ditsy blond who runs around in red underwear and gets killed off so the audience can rejoice. She did that fine. She is not suppose to give an Oscar performance, nor does this kind of movie call for it.
As you can predict and guess, people are killed off. But this movie had some interesting gore to it. You can tell a lot of time was spent with the art direction on this movie. Each killing in this movie is a style in it's own. Plus, the director spends a great amount of time lingering on the death far after it is over. We are left to a hand full of people battling the evil twins who we saw at the start of the movie.
Apparently, the whole town is made of wax, without any real people but the twins. We then get treated to an extremely cool chase scene between the characters and the twins. We see more of the "House of Wax" itself, we see a movie theater made of wax, we see wax all over. This is a big budget cool looking horror movie and that stands out because it has so much style and such an interesting look to it.
The ending of the movie has people falling down the house of wax and falling through the ceiling.
