Movie Review by Joe
May 23rd, 2006

This is proof that even with superior effects, unbelieable sets, and some of the most well-known teenie bopper actors, you just can't compare with the original.

The original House of Wax, released in 1953, was the first ever feature produced by a major studio in 3D (imdb.com). The original plot was: "A horribly disfigured sculptor opens up the House of Wax in New York, using the wax-covered bodies of his victims as his displays." (imdb.com).

Fast-forward 52 years later, in 2005, when the remake to House of Wax was released. Directed by first-time Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra, this House of Wax stars Elisha Cuthbert (TV's "24"), Chad Michael Murray (TV's "One Tree Hill"), Jon Abrahams (They, Scary Movie), and...Paris Hilton (TV's "The Simple Life").

The plot for the 2005 House of Was is: "A group of friends on their way to a college football game falls prey to a pair of murderous brothers in an abandoned small town" (imdb.com).

This is your typical horror-movie where you have several teenage idiots who you don't know a lot about, and one-by-one they begin to die. You can almost predict who will survive, and the story - albeit an interesting and original (well, original from the remake) story - still didn't draw us into many of the characters. In fact, the only two people you start rooting for is twin brother-sister (they don't even look like twins) Carly (Cuthbert) and Nick (Murray).

The only truly scary part of this movie was seeing Paris Hilton in nothing but a bra and panties. Now THAT would make even the most hard-hearted, fearless individual scream like a little girl and run out of the room.

So of course it was VERY gratifying to see Hilton's character meet her eventual end.

Other than that, the movie was ok. Not good, not bad. Just ok. A good movie to rent. Or buy if it is available for less than $6.00.

Carly Jones: I don't believe this. You steal a car and it's my fault. You evade arrest and it's the cops' fault...
Nick Jones: One of 'em took a swing at me.
Carly Jones: You get kicked out of the house, it's mom and dad's fault. You lose your football scholarship and it's the coach's fault! You can't keep a job for more than two weeks because it's every manager's fault!
Nick Jones: I'm surrounded by idiots.
Carly Jones: So then why did you come, to piss me off?
Nick Jones: Why don't you get it? You're the good twin, I'm the evil one.
