A follow up to Sling Blade.
I saw this film when it first was released and remember liking it pretty well. I dug it out the other night not remembering too much about it and thought that I would watch it again. I really enjoyed this film the second time around.
First off, I love Billy Bob Thorton in this type of role. His character is very quiet, soft spoken, calm....but serious about what he wants and he does not let anyone step on his toes. As a former pot seller he tried running from the police one night with wife and child in the car. A very bad wreck happened which broke his wife's neck and killed his boy. After spending nearly 20 years in jail he returns home in search of redemption.
His wife was never expected to even walk again, she does but she is in constant pain and the only way she has found to get any break from the agony is to let the local kids have sex with her. The audience is led to believe that orgasms for her relieve the pain for a few seconds.
So when Joe comes back you meet a character by the name of Snake which is the new big bad drug dealer that thinks he runs the whole little town. Snake is played by Ray McKinnon which is also the writer and director of the script. If the name does not ring a bell he played Reverend H.W. Smith on Deadwood which is where I recognized him from.
So needless to say Snake wants Joe to grow pot again because Joe kept it gangsta and grew the sticky icky weed that everyone liked and Joe is done with that life so problems erupt.
Everyone that's is in this film really does a wonderful job. You got Harry Lennix as a blind college student which you know as Commander Lock from the Matrix films.....Lisa Blount actually steals the show for me, she does her own singing in the film and its a shame that she doesn't have a record deal. She gives a great performance that would give Sling Blade himself a run for the money. Also some very notable performances from Harry Dean Stanton, Colin Fickes (who was recently in Transformers) and Walton Goggins who played Wallace in one of my favorites Shanghai Noon.
Check this out......its great.
