Movie Review by Scott
April 30th, 2005

An original, smart spoof of the “Charlie’s Angels” films but with a lot of differences

I remember seeing the trailer for “D.E.B.S” not too long ago. To be honest it didn’t really scream out to me see this movie. But however the more I read about it, the more I wanted to see it. After hearing it to be a spoof off “Charlie’s Angels” I was hooked because I HATED “Charlie’s Angels.” But then I read the tagline for the film which read they're crime-fighting hotties with killer bodies and I was like wow is that cheesy but then I said it a few times to myself and said that’s actually kind of funny. So tonight
I finally had a chance to see “D.E.B.S” which I wanted to see since it opened on Friday but didn’t get to go until tonight Easter Sunday for a couple of reasons. But continue reading to see what I thought of the movie “D.E.B.S”

D.E.B.S starts off talking about the S.A.T.’s and hidden within is a secret test that shows a girl's potential to perform duties as a spy. Those who score highest on this secret scale are recruited to join a secret academy where they will be trained to become spies known as D.E.B.S. The movie focuses on one group of four girls Max (Meagan Good), Amy (Sara Foster), Dominique (Devon Aoki) and Janet (Jill Ritchie) who are on a mission to stop Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster) from committing crimes. A fun time ensues…

Now before I dive into reviewing this movie let me first say, “D.E.B.S” is not a film that should be judged like an Oscar piece. It’s a fun good-hearted film, which requires little thinking. However, I can see many people watching this film and saying what’s funny about this? Because it’s really not like a slapstick spoof or on the surface humor, in fact I wouldn’t even say it was a laugh out loud comedy. Just a film where you chuckle here and there and just watch and enjoy it with a big smile on your face.

This movie is a perfect spoof of the awful “Charlie’s Angels” sequel with Michael Clark Duncan basically playing the role of Bernie Mac who played Bosley in the “Charlie’s Angels” sequel and of course Jordana Brewster playing the role of Demi Moore the villain. Perhaps the best thing about the movie was the love story and this is because it’s such a weird one, the hero falling in love with the villain. What makes it even more unique is the fact that the hero and the villain are both female. You have to give it up to Independent Films for really allowing the gay and lesbian community to show themselves in films. I think a lot of G&L films are really good such as “Latter Days”, “Mambo Italiano”, and one of my favorite films “ Lost & Delirious.” In the end, “D.E.B.S” makes an excellent point despite most of its silly and fun story and that is being true to yourself and don’t hide who you really are.

In all, “D.E.B.S” is a great low budget popcorn flick. 300 times better then anything “Charlie’s Angels” could ever be. The movie is a lot of fun and pretty original. As I said earlier it won’t grab everyone’s attention because the tagline is so misleading. From the tagline you would think it’s about sexy girls running around in skimpy clothing but it’s more than that and that’s where the movie can be misleading. It’s not drop dead funny nor is it all about T&A, just a funny little flick with an interesting, unique and surprisingly pretty serious love story mixed in. In most films nowadays I am sickened by love stories but in this film it fit right in and gave the film more juice.

The acting wasn’t Oscar worthy but for the type of film “D.E.B.S” is it’s perfect. The chemistry between Sara Foster and Jordana Brewster was so perfect and seemed so real that when I came home from the film, I had to look them up and make sure they weren’t really a couple because their connection in the film was so believable.

In conclusion, “D.E.B.S.” is a really fun little flick, a nice mix of light comedy, action, and romance. There are a few memorable scenes one being Lucy kidnapping Amy that involves a whole montage of Amy and Lucy falling in love and Janet and Scud’s (Jimmi Simpson) email romance. The film isn’t over the top sexy or funny. There are no sex jokes or fart jokes here (Thank you very much Mrs. Robinson). Most importantly the film handles the relationship of Amy and Lucy in a very mature and respectful matter. We don’t need any girl on girl sex scenes here to make the point that there is an attraction; just a couple stares and a few kisses prove the point perfectly. Also the 80’s soundtrack was pretty awesome. I really enjoyed this film more then I probably should have but it was better then it had the right to be which is why I have to give it a pretty high rating.
