There is nothing like examining a troubling problem through the experience of children living it to prompt better understanding, as well as a good cry. But Born in Brothels moves beyond an examination of the poverty in Calcutta's red light district to get at something much more expansive: what is the role of art in the midst of tragedy? It is no surprise that when given a camera, the dynamic, often charming kids living in the brothels of Calcutta take some truly amazing photos.
This film will remind you of the importance of art, especially photography, in telling stories and providing solace. It also provides a window into the frustrating bureaucracy that often prevents children in the red light district from ever getting out.
Another thing I loved was getting a view into the personalities of each child in the photo class, as well as their unique family situations. The red light district is not the great equalizer -- each family still has its own story to tell, and the movie gets into those sometimes heartbreaking tales very well.
We as viewers so want to see these talented kids "make it." And some may. But it it impossible to walk out of this theater without wanting to do more -- whether that is helping these children in some way, or picking up a camera yourself.
