Movie Review by Lona

Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato deliver another shock/documentary, narrated by Dennis Hopper including appearances from John Waters, Larry Flynt, Erica Jong, Hugh Hefner, Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Wes Craven and Annie Sprinkle. Inside Deep Throat is one of the most entertaining documentaries I have ever seen.

Deep Throat was made for $25,000 and grossed $600 million dollars, after 30 years Deep Throat remains the most profitable film in motion picture history. In some cinemas it played 20 hours a day, cinemas were being raided for screening it which only created more of a demand to see it. Inside Deep Throat takes a look at the mob connections tied in with the movie, the impact it had on the actor's lives, and the court cases surrounding it. The first half of the film focuses on making the film including interviews with the Director of Deep Throat, Gerard Damiano, who retells memories of Lovelace and the chaos that Deep Throat caused. The second half focuses more on the actors.

Lovelace died in 2002 so was not in the documentary. Her sister who tells a sob story and in the bonus footage reads an amusing poem called "Ode to Linda" certainly provided some good entertainment. 800 hours of interview and archive footage was rounded up by the directors and portions used in the movie. The blend of modern day footage/interviews was equal to the amount of archive footage and interviews which I rather liked as most documentaries focus on the now. It was great to see footage of Linda on TV with Gloria Steinem who proclaimed Linda was a hostage of porn; Steinem never let Linda speak a word herself and acted as her guard dog jumping down the throat of the interviewer.Years later Linda realized that feminists exploited her and made money off her and of course Linda never saw a cent of it.

This is a documentary well worth watching if you are a fan of the movie, or if you are intrigued by real life stories. Whether it is an interest in porn, women's rights or law and censorship battles this documentary will entertain you. Inside Deep Throat is colorful and dignified, sexually explicit at times but remains charming and enlightening, it is full of interesting characters such as one elderly lady proclaiming "I wanted to see a dirty movie....and I liked it".

It is simply amazing the transition porn has made, from a borderline comedy movie to hardcore sex with little storyline, Linda Lovelace paved a path for future porn stars and in the sad reality as seen in the documentary many modern day porn stars don't even know who she is. Another subject dealt with in the doco and in the bonus features on the dvd (which there are plenty of) is the impact pornography has on society, opinions of judges, FBI agents, porn stars and directors are equally represented, and you come away agreeing with everyone in a way.

I've rented this a couple of times and somehow never ended up watching it. I love documentaries, especially those detailing the behind the scenes aspect of porn. The one about Ron Jeremy was particularly interesting as well.
