An alternate name for this movie should be "Hide and SLEEP," because as I was watching it I was slowly drifting into sleepy sleepy land.
First of all...DeNiro...what's up there buddy? I'm sure you'll NEVER put this movie as a reference...try Analyze This, Casino, Cape Fear, Goodfellas, or The Godfather II. For goodness sakes, even put "Meet the Fockers" before you'd ever credit yourself to starring in this disaster!
Directed by John Polson, the premise of this movie is a simple one. Psychologist David Callaway (DeNiro) moves him and his young daughter Emily (Dakota Fanning) from their apartment in the city to the country after the shocking suicide of his wife Alison (Amy Irving), despite the warnings of fellow psychologist and personal friend Katherine (Famke Janssen).
As soon as they arrive they meet the very strange sheriff Laugherty...oh wait, I mean Hafferty (Dylan Baker) and his new neighbors Laura (Melissa Leo) and Steven (Robert John Burke), who just lost their daughter to some disease. Then David meets new love interest Elizabeth (Elisabeth Shue) and her niece Amy (Molly Grant Kallins), who is Emily's age.
Ever since her mother's death, Emily has been in a state of comatose, not talking anyone, and David is worried when she 'invents' a new friend named Charlie. Emily says Charlie doesn't like David and will do anything to make sure David isn't happy. Every night David is haunted by dreams and goes to the bathroom (where he found his dead wife) and every night sees messages written in red crayon (and sometimes also leaving special 'surprises'), and Emily says it's Charlie doing it.
This movie could have been a lot better. Seriously. Dakota Fanning was amazing, she'll be a superior leading actress someday. But not even she could save this floating disaster.
It seemed like the last thirty minutes of the movie were done after everything else, and the director thought he should add a twist to make the ending more memorable. It made it more memorable, but not in a good way. The ending had little to do with what happened the previous hour and a half, and left me puzzled with many questions that were unanswered at the end.
But I won't ruin it for you. Check it out for yourself. Then you'll have questions too.
Here's hoping that this game of Hide and Seek will never be sought for again.
David: You know Charlie doesn't exist.
Emily: You shouldn't say that.
David: Why not?
Emily: You're gonna make him mad.
