Movie Review by Chad
May 28th, 2005

I really thought the trailer for this movie looked great and so I was amped to see it. After being dissapointed so many times by trailers though, I didn't get my hopes too far up.

However, this movie went leaps and bounds over what the trailer said it would be. I'm not even sure where to begin talking about it. I guess I'll start at the story. It took an old formula, "messed up families", and while not doing anything groundbreaking with it, twisted just enough to make it feel fresh again. The movie follows Tim Travis (Emile Hirsch, who made me a fan in "The Girl Next Door") and the series of events that follow him throughout the entire year. Some of the events were a bit contrived (the mom's sickness at the end) but a lot of the movie is very relatable for me and I really felt that it had a very strong story, which makes it stand out in it's genre.

The acting was fantastic and made me like Jeff Daniels again. Hirsch again turned in a great performace, as did Sigourney Weaver as his pot-smoking, neighbor hating mom; Jeff Daniels as his alienating jerk-off father, Michelle Williams as his drug addled, expierimental college aged sister, and Ryan Donowho as his...well, drug addled, expierimental high school aged best friend.

The speech at the graduation, which is the final scene of the movie, was hilarious and sort of encompassed everything I thought when I was in high school two short years ago: "These were the best years of our life. At least that's what they told us. Personally, I hated high school. I hated all of you and I hope you all rot in hell."

Perfect.
