"Closer" staring Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts is a film about 4 sexually active, lying, but sometimes too truthful people tangled in a 4 way mess. And, oh, how we love it so. Based on the diagloue and subject matter, let me tell you this is NOT a movie to bring your children to.
Jude Law meets Natalie Portman at a chance encounter by her getting hit by a cab. They meet, they fall in love, and have a happy relationship .. or so it seems. On their one year anniversary, Law is being photographed by Julie Roberts, they kiss ... and he falls in love. But she has a husband at the time and he is involved with Portman. Yet Jude Law will not let go.
He plays a prank on Clive Owen and sets up a meeting with him and Julia Roberts. They fall in love and even get married. While Law is with Portman still. But behind their lovers back, Law and Roberts are having sex.
Law and Portman break up, she becomes a stripper again. Clive Owen and Julie Roberts break up, and he goes on a rant that has to be seen to be believed. Roberts and Law get together again, and so on and so forth. It's one big break up, get back together, have sex after another!
Yet it works VERY well and I will tell you. A lot is going on, but not a lot is going on if that makes any semblance of sense. Not much action or noise on the screen, but all the scenes are moved along so well and so fascinating by the dialog of all 4 characters.
It's spellbinding the words they use, how fast it goes, and how untested and focused you are on every word they say. Most people might find these characters low lives, liars, cheaters and scumbags. Which they very might well be. But it's interesting to see these 4 people who all want love, and can get it, but have no clue how to keep that love and make it last.
They are not total feeling less people. They do hurt, feel pain, and regret. They just have no clue how to keep love for a long period of time and remain with one person. It's so interesting because of the dialog, the elements, the amazing acting. I see why it got so many academy awards nominations.
If you are not into dialog driven movies, pass on this one. Because not much happens, and you might find it "boring". But if you like smart, interesting, well written dialog with amazing acting and hard scenes of frank and brutally honest dialog. You will LOVE "Closer".
