Movie Review by brian
July 9th, 2008

i saw it several times

prior to 2004, we rarely had the pleasure of seeing a psychological film with the level of intensity as seen here. in fact, lions gate was one of the few studios which actually would give us something as violent as this. trust me, those of you who haven't seen this film are in for a treat. don't let the cast members such as cary elwes or danny glover fool you. saw is as vicious or bloody film as the multiplex theatres would allow you to see.

the premise is actually pretty darn clever too. the killer branded "jigsaw" has never actually killed anyone. no, he places them in traps which are almost near impossible to break away from & here we see some of the hideous deaths ever placed on any mainstream film. well, most of the footage shows merely the aftermath which the exception of one survivor's traumatic experience with near death.

when the film opens, we see two guys chained to pipes in what would appear to be a vacated garage or basement. throughout the course of the film, the two must work together in finding clues as to how they ended up here & what they must do to break free. as they unravel the grisly clues one by one, it's revealed that no one is getting out alive unless one of them kills the other. naturally, there is race against time as well. sounds like fun, doesn't it?

with a first-rate cast & some pretty cool death scenes, saw spawned three sequels but i still think this one was by the best in my opinion. again, this is a must see if you haven't seen the original. rent it or own it.
