Brother Ray
Ray Charles, it was a film waiting to happen. With all the biopics which are being released you're going to realise that A blind black big band musician who grew up from the 40's onwards is going to be one hell of a story to tell.
Jamie Foxx did make a fantastic job of the starring role and set him out there as an actor. His mannerisms and tone of voice we right on the dot. He was able to portray Charles' great love for music, women and his need for drugs. It's not often that you get a film which is pretty much as close to the truth as is possible in hollywood standards. For instance take a look at Walk the Line. I thought it was a great movie but the somewhat innocent view of how Johnny started on drugs is a little bit unrealistic. In Ray we see he cheats on his wife and uses women when it suits him, we see how he choose to use heroin and wasn't pushed and we see his reaction to becoming famous.
Of course before Charles passed away he was involved in the pre-production part of the movie. In the Ray Charles autobiography it has a lot more details than the movie. But making every single story of his life onto the screen would probably be a trilogy. The point is with Ray Charles involved beforehand we know it is going to come from the horses mouth. Also Ray Charles Robinson Jr produced it keeps the story realistic and close to home.
As for the supporting cast; the many women who flew in and out of his life, his bandmates, his wife and his friends. As such a realistic film everything has to be perfect in order for it to work. Worldwide it is recognised as a wonderful film. Recording the Atlantic years to the time at ABC, his personal relationships with the producers at Atlantic and with the rest of the supporting cast.
One scene in which its after Ray's got busted and then paid off the d.a his wife B gets him in the house and tells him his boys are being bullied because of what's in the news about the drug bust. Ray being Ray he won't listen to nobody untill B goes off with one of the most powerful scenes in the movie. Handing Ray his sons sports trophey and that was his most proudest day untill his dad was too loaded to go see it. The drugs are what really hurt her but she knows the consequences of it and she is blunt. If he keeps going with it he will lose the thing he loves more than drugs, her, his kids, the women on the road but his music.
There's nothing too Hollywood about this movie. Apart from the amazing soundtrack that is :) I just plain "dig it" as Brother Ray would say himself.
