One of the Best Horror Movies I've Seen In A While

The Grudge Movie Review

Director: Takashi Shimizu

Actors: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Behr, and KaDee Strickland

Rated PG-13: For Mature Thematic Material, Disturbing Images, Terror Violence and Some Sensuality.

The Grudge is a curse of one who dies in the grip of a powerful rage. Those who encounter this murderous supernatural curse die and a new one is born - passed like a virus from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. Karen (Gellar) is new to Tokyo and works for a volunteer care center. She is given her first assignment at a house newly inhabited by the Williams family and soon is thrust into the world of a trio of murderous ghosts.

Firstly, I have not seen Ju On. So you are getting this review of The Grudge as a stand-alone film - like the Japanese version never existed. Well the cast does an acceptable job, though there is only real one standout performance here and that belongs to Sarah Michelle Gellar, and the main reason for that is well because she's one of the best actresses of my time. She can adapt to any kind of movie and actually make it worth seeing. The mood and imagery of The Grudge is probably its best quality. There are some genuinely creepy moments and the appearance of the specters is fairly unsettling - their gestures and vocalizations are the stuff that makes skin crawl. I was also a fan of the non-linear way the story was told - having scenes from the present play out followed by scenes from the past that answered some questions left from the previous scene. I do however have only one complaint I don't want to spoil anything but if the cops knew about the cruse or grudge in the house how come they didn't do anything about it? The definition states that the person or people who died in the grip of rage must gather in the place of death and stay there. So how come they didn't destroy the house? That doesn't quite fit the story line perfectly but the movie is still good.

Overall this is a good ghost story but could have been better.
