Tina Majorino and Jon Heder in Fox Searchlight's Napoleon DynamiteJon Heder and Aaron Ruell in Fox Searchlight's Napoleon Dynamite
In the same way "Revenge of the Nerds" was popular, in 2004, a film entitled "Napoleon Dynamite" took the film nation by storm. People either loved the movie, hated the movie, or just didn't get into it and were indifferent to it. I, was one of the people who thought it was different take on the nerd genre with some laughs and fun characters. Not a classic by any means, but kept me laughing more times then it kept me rolling my eyes. So a success in my eyes.

It stars Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder),an Iowa nerd who does not fit in, has a fro, moon boots, and skills. Since as he states in the movie, women only like men who have great skills. I cannot disagree. He lives with his grandma who is wild and crazy and enjoys going on the sand dunes, he also has a brother kip who enjoys attending on-line chat rooms and chatting with babes.

A normal school day for Napoleon is not enjoyable. He is apart of the happy hands club, and no it's not a masturbation club in-case you were wondering. They do different kind of hand dances to catchy 80's tunes. He often gets bullied and picked on for being different and bizarre to the other students. They don't understand him, so it's easier to pick on him instead.

His life also takes some changes during the school year. His grandma ends up injuring herself while visiting her boyfriend at the sand dunes. His Uncle Rico played by Jon Gries, who is stuck in 1982 and his wonderful college years when he was on top of the world takes her place. He tries to avoid Rico since he embarrasses Napoleon, throws meat at him, and gets him in trouble withhis friends. He also meets Pedro, a mustache pal and shy, but cute Deb.

The trio of misfits decide to lead a campaign to have Pedro as class president. They have to face the blond bombshell Summer played by Hilary Duff's sister Haylie Duff. Who does not have much acting chops, looks bored, but is not bad to look at.

"Napoleon Dynamite" is the type of movie which won't appeal to everyone. A lot of the scenes fall flat on their face and are lacking humor. While others are laugh out loud. But I laughed for about 65 percent of the film, so that's enough to say it's worth checking out.

I think it's the type of movie where you are laughing with them, not at them. Which is why it works very well. If you feel bad for laughing at them, a lot of the humor will be rather rude. Also, the characters are funny and don't even know it. They are just being themselves. They are lovable nerds.

It's an original comedy with original and likable characters. Worth a view.
