Movie Review by Wyan
June 1st, 2005

I've gotta say, I don't get this film. Yeah, it's quirky and amusing, but not LMAO funny. It definitely can't be accused of taking a saccharine view of Napoleon and his world. The dude is pathetic. He's sad and lonely, and Jon Heder's 'pathetisad (Kate O'Brien, The Drew Carey Show)' characterization grates on my nerves.
Napoleon's a geek with ZERO self-confidence, he knows it, Heder knows it, and we know it. He doesn't have his Carrie moment or his Daniel Larusso moment. We know that he's going to wake up tomorrow and he's still going to be Napoleon. He danced in front of the school, but that's not going to improve his soul. Did you see how he ran off the stage? The poor guy nearly died of a self-induced panic attack from the pressure.
I think this is a decent film but it won't reach cult status in my house. I couldn't identify enough with Napoleon. I saw that he was a loser and felt pity, not empathy. He had so much pain, which he wore on his sleeve, that I couldn't feel with him and identify with him like all of you. I thought he was the annoying outsider like the zaftig Franklin in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where instead of supporting him for being in a wheelchair, the audience starts to root for Leatherface to get him.
Write me if you can explain the appeal of Napoleon Dynamite, 'cuz I just DO NOT get it.
