Movie Review by Ilana
November 2nd, 2004

It’s no secret that, lately, there has been something missing from modern cinema. Yes, folks, I’m talking about llamas in feature length films. Well, hold onto your hats, “Napoleon Dynamite” is the answer to your llama-craving prayers.

Though the film centers on dorky Napoleon and his squad of equally dorky pals and eccentric family members, my money is on Tina the llama for a supporting role Oscar this year. With impeccable comedic timing, frankly, she steals the show.

But if you’re not into llamas (is it the spitting thing?), and you do still manage to have some semblance of a sense of humor, “Napoleon Dynamite” is bound to make you laugh. Full of clever catch phrases (“flippin’ sweet”) and characters so ludicrous that they’ll probably remind you of people you know, each scene is a masterful skit unto itself. Though a few solid sub-plots thread through “Napoleon Dynamite,” the genius of the film lies in its masterful micro-skits; each scene could easily stand on its own. And while some movie-goers might find this aspect of it annoying, it worked well for an ADD-type like myself. The key to on-screen humor is to make your joke and move on with it (rather than drag on with it). Writers Jared and Jerusha Hess clearly get this concept. Thanks, boys.

I’ll wrap up with this . . . I’m incredibly picky when it comes to movies. Plus, I’m cheap. Unless it promises to be good, I won’t pay. “Napoleon Dynamite” delivered on the promise.

Fin.
