Who wouldn't want to watch a movie about sex acts and all the different variants of it? Apparently the MPAA, which slapped this movie with an NC-17 rating for "pervasive sexual content."
When I think of pervasive sexual content, I think of porn movies. While I adore John Waters for other reasons, this movie didn't end up being one of them. The man that made movies which shocked a nation years ago really ended up doing it by accident. When he TRIES to gross people out, he fails.
I won't say that he fails miserably, however, as this movie DOES have a few choice moments which are giggle-worthy. The problem is that they are too few and far between. Not enough sex/actual nudity to have that naughty feeling to it and not enough humour to have it be actually funny.
In fact, I think I might have had more laughs while watching an actual porn movie, and most of those were supposedly unintentional.
So I'm giving this a marginal rating, but I AM urging you to watch this film. I think that we need to show the MPAA that we're not afraid of an NC-17 rating, especially when I've seen R rated material that was far more offensive than anything that was shown in this movie.
Essentially it's like one of those films that they would show you in health class. They explain all of the various body parts and acts, they just don't do it with clinical terms and some guy standing in front of the camera trying to look professional.
In fact... I think this movie should be shown in more high school health classes instead of what they already have. It's not like it's all that much more entertaining, but it is more educational.
