Shaun of the Dead or how I learned to love zombies

I've never really been a big zombie movie fan. It isn't the rampant violence, blood and gore that bothers me. It's more the predictability...

...infection starts... infection spreads... hero and group of friends/strangers band together to survive... member of group gets infected... much blood, gore, brain eating... everyone dies (alternatively few survive to raise hope for gratuitous sequel!)

One of my problems with zombie films is that I can't find it in myself to care for characters who have no past, no real relationships and no future beyond the development of fighting skills... I find myself routing for the zombies. People are stupid - go eat them!

So I didn't rush to the cinema to see Shaun of the dead (partially because my brother had been driving me mad calling me Dawn of the dead- when zombies hit Ireland I'll use him as a human shield!)

After seeing Hot Fuzz and loving it I got Shaun of the Dead on DVD and settled back to be entertained. I was not disappointed. I was rolling around in hysterics at certain parts...

Shaun of the dead is a teriffic comedy horror. The characters are real people with life histories, dysfunctional relationships and dead-end jobs. No one dimensional hero types here.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are brilliant as best mates Shaun and Ed; their real life friendship adds an extra dimension. Kate Ashfield is great as Shaun's long suffering girlfriend and I really enjoyed Bill Nighy as Shaun's ill-fated stepdad.

The zombies themselves were equally disgusting, scary and hysterically funny. I loved the attitude of writers Pegg and Egdgar Wright that the people of England were already indistinguishable from zombies before disaster struck!

I'd recommend buying this film so you can laugh out loud again and again.

Check out the special features. They are plentiful and entertaining.

You say that like it's an insult.

I am stoked about getting Hot Fuzz, because I know the boys aren't going to let me down on the special features.

And don't even get me started on the 2-disc Pan's Labyrinth set. *sigh*

Not an insult. Merely an observation. And I DID watch *some* of the features on the DVD. I usually watch deleted and alternate scenes. But I never sit through commentaries. Even for the directors and movies that I really like. I find them (don't hit me) boring.

I enjoyed the "plot holes" special features and also Simon and Edgar talking through their first ideas for the film. Haven't watched commentaries. I might do since I think Pegg/Wright/Frost would be a lot more entertaining than many others.

You're both nerds in my book. Although I can't deny that I have had my fair share of watching far too many special features on just about every dvd I could find in my sister's house when I was living with her without internet or cable or any way of getting a hold of my friends for almost 9 months...
