Movie Review by Seth
December 5th, 2004

So close.

This movie was so close.

But let's start from the beginning. This film is great. It is full of those little scenes, those little bits, that make someone who loves films like Amelie, Rushmore, and The Big Lebowski fall in love with it. In fact, the first half hour or so is nothing more than one random scene after another, all unique, all utterly fantastic. In some sense, this is exactly what it's like when you go home again (which the character is doing); you seem to transport from one setting to another, all of them familiar, yet all of them unattached.

The dialog is great, real, and humerous. The scenes, much like Sofia Coppola's 'Lost in Translation' make you feel like you are there or have been there before.

So, why was it "close?" Because of the ending. Whereas 'Lost in Translation' has one of the better endings I have ever seen, mostly because of its ambiguous-ness and lack of hollywood ending, this film falls short in the end. It takes an easy path to finish the film and betrays the characters a little in doing so.

Zack Braff has a good career ahead of him, hopefully he'll learn to carry his unique style through the entire film on his next one.
