With it's comic quirkiness, huge heart, beautiful soundtrack and an undeniably loveable performance from Natalie Portman, it's hard to deny the greatness of Zach Braff's debut film Garden State. Reminiscent of Mike Nichols's The Graduate and Ted Demme's Beautiful Girls - two other perfect films - Garden State doesn't really offer us anything new in the story department, yet it's tale of a young man desperately trying to find himself by returning to his small simple hometown is a timeless one.
There is a part of Andrew Largeman, State's main character, that resides in all of us and there's so much truth in some of his and his fellow slacker friend's observation that it's amazing they've never been said before.
Even though it's ending is a terrible one as it's resolution, or lack thereof, comes brutally too quick, Garden State still touched my soul probably more then any other film released this year.
