You know, I took a long time before deciding to write some reviews for movies that I've seen a couple of times previously. GARDEN STATE is one of those movies that sits in my head and I still think about from time to time, mainly because it has one of my favorite actors playing what seems like an irredeemable soul, Peter Sarsgaard. He's a grave digger who steals from the dead and smokes too much pot while living with his mother who is supposedly in AA.
The movie isn't about him, but I choose to look at the movie from that angle and not from all the noise that goes on around it with the leads, Braff and Portman. Sure, the quirky guy with the f*cked up family is going to miraculously stumble upon the quirky (and amazingly enough absolutely gorgeous) girl who falls for him with little reservation. It's that portion of the movie which brings it down in my view, cheapens it. I've seen plenty of love stories and they're pretty much all similar to that, so it's got to be some incredible chemistry or really witty dialog to win me over.
No, the movie for me is about the stoner loser who returns sh*t off the shelves in order to make enough money to buy back something that he should have never lost in the first place. It is his journey in learning how to be a friend and a decent human being (even if it takes nefarious means to get there) which is more intriguing to me. Sarsgaard, in his quiet and grumbling kind of manner, which makes the movie for me. Watch the movie from his angle and you just might even love the movie you thought you loved even more.

| I actually hated this film. I hated it so much that I couldn't watch the whole thing. I will try again and look at it through your viewpoint to see if I like it better. |
