Movie Review by Tony March 31st, 2006

Ever see a movie that you had a predetermined thought about and you were proved wrong? That was the case with me and Ladder 49. I walked in thinking you would see a lot of fire scenes, high chase pursuits in an attempt to save people, lots of fire, and hero like scenes, and a lot of noise on the screen. You see that in this movie, but it's about SO much more then that. It's about these people and who they are, their personalities, their culture, and just why they do what they do. It's perhaps the most accurate description and portrayal of firefighters I have seen in film.
This movie is very believable, honest, and does not insult anyone's intelligence. It also gives new life and a new respect to firefighters. From now on, when I see a firetruck down the street, I will stop and take notice. I think firefighters and what they do is severely overlooked because it is so familiar, and I think that is a shame after viewing this movie.
This movie stars Joaquin Phoenix, who is one of the finest actors in Hollywood, which such great work as Hotel Rwanda and Gladiator. Also, the fire captain John Travolta. It shows Joaquin in a situation at the beginning of the film where it looks like there is no way out and he is trapped. He takes this moment to think about his life from the first days of becoming a firefighter to now.

This movie then goes into great detail and shows firsthand the affects this has on the families, kids, friends and everyone involved. Did you ever stop and think to yourself, why do people run into a burning building to help people? I know this occurs daily, but I highly disagree that, that takes away from what they do and the importance of what they do. They put their lives into their own hands to save other people.
Jacinda Barrett and John Travolta in Touchstone's Ladder 49
All because they love their job and they know someone has to take action and save people. We see the highs, lows and everything in between about being a firefighter. We see the positive, negatives as well. We see these men as actual people as well. With their family lives, hanging out with friends and we really get a sense of the person behind the firefighter. Where in so many movies the firefighter is a gimmick and a cardboard cut-out. In this film they are given a personality, a life, and so much more.
Joaquin Phoenix in Touchstone's Ladder 49
This movie might not give us what we want, or what we think we should get, but what it does give us is believability and honesty. At the end of this moment, I was very thoughtful and it affected me in a way I didn't expect. I think people walking out of this film will be surprised at how effected they are.
