Huge
With films like Alexander and 300 being released, the whole history genre has taken a big turn. Alexander, being a very bad movie, told the story of Alexander, while the film had its good scenes, it failed in my terms. Troy, directed by Wolfgang Peterson, succeeds in terms of all the major battle scenes and the dramatic subplots that add a little more to the movie. Running at 2 hours and 40 minutes, there were moments which bored me, but all the battles and tension moments brought me right back into the feel of the film.
Brad Pitt plays as our epic hero Achilles, actually getting the role just right. Being a history buff, I was happy to see that Brad has given the character a personality of its own, since historians dont know to much about it. While in some moments, Achilles could be a little goofy or funny, when the time comes to fight though, he becomes a whole new person quickly. Brian Cox plays as Agememnon, the selfish and very rude king. Brian nailed his role in the Bourne series, but kind of lacked something in his part here. Eric Bana does a great job in the shoes of Hector.
As most history films do, there are atleast 3 or 4 major battle sequences, and in normal film fashion, theyre drenched in gallons and gallonds of violence. Wolfgang Peterson did a great job directing The Patriot and gets every fight scene in Troy just right. The fight on the beach was the worst of them all, for some reason I just didnt think it was staged right and everything. The final battle in Troy, that actually took place in Troy was great in terms of all the directing and action goes.
Bottom Line: While Not A Classic. It Stands Out
