Movie Review by Joe
May 14th, 2006

Being a strong Christian, I remember when this movie came out, and our youth pastor immediately booed it and said it was of the devil and no one with a real Christian upbringing should ever see it.

So I did.

And let me tell you, I never laughed that hard in my entire life! The first thirty minutes of the movie was pure hilarity, and I can see why youth pastors wouldn't want their students to see it - because it's real. I associated many people in my life with people who acted in the movie. I have met many "Hilary Fays" (Mandy Moore) in my time. People who acted holier-than-thou but deep down struggled with insecurities. I can associate with Mary (Jena Malone) as she struggled with 'secret sin' that she knew if exposed would make her the scapegoat of the youth.

And I have a newfound respect for Macaulay Culkin, who played the handicapped Roland. His quirks and jokes were extremely hilarious.

In the middle and end of the movie, the morals started to poke through the movie. There are many morals in this movie, and good ones at that:

1) You cannot judge a book by its cover. The only Jewish girl at the Christian school, Cassandra (Eva Amurri), was labeled as the "bad girl" by the other Christians. She swore, smoked, and had premarital sex, but when Mary needed someone to talk to, Cassandra was the only one who would help her.

2) Everyone has flaws. The youth pastor/principal of the school Skip (Martin Donovan) was always talking about how the Bible is black and white, and there is no gray areas, yet he was having an affair with Mary's mother, Lillian (Mary-Louise Parker).

3) God can forgive anyone. Both Mary and Hilary - after their 'sins' were exposed, were forgiven and learned from their mistakes.

All in all, Saved! is something EVERY good Christian should see...it's how the world sees us!
