Movie Review by Melissa
November 18th, 2007

Good, but not the best

Before I begin my review, I must say I am a die-hard chick flick fan. I've seen Steel Magnolias and bawled. I only watch disc 2 of Titanic, and bawl. I wish for Lloyd Dobler to stand outside my bedroom window with his boombox blaring Peter Gabriel. And as anybody with a substantial amount of estrogen would do, I saw The Notebook.

Before going to any movie that is adapted from a book, I read the book first. I don't read Nicholas Sparks. I'm all down for a cheesy romance novel from time to time, but his books require some wine to go with his cheese. The story was lovely and decent, even if it is a step out of what I normally would read. And then, I saw the movie.

I love Ryan Gosling. Rachel McAdams is great in this film, and it really showed she can be better than a blonde Plastic from Mean Girls. Their love story is cliche and formulated: boy loves girl. Girl loves boy. Girl's family doesn't want them to be together. Girl gets taken away from him. Years later, they meet up while she is already in love, but doubting her relationship. And if you've seen the movie, you know the rest. The movie flashbacks from their summer love to their early adult lives, and then to them in their old age, living together in a nursing home while Ally (Rachel McAdams) suffers from Alzheiemers. Noah (Ryan Gosling) reads her their Notebook...their love story he wrote for her when they received her diagnosis. She remembers none of it, and thinks of it as a simple love story. Then once in a blue moon, she'll snap into reality and realize who he is.

I won't say I didn't cry, because I did. Not during the end, however, where most people did. I cried during their flashbacks. There is a memorable fight scene between the two in their young adult lives and I have had that EXACT same fight with a former love, and watching it felt as though I was re-living it. It was good.

So, although it was a good film, I am only giving it three stars. I've seen better and more original films. If you are a chick flick enthusiast, watch with chocolates, a mani/pedi set, and your best girlfriends.
