Movie Review by hannah jack
October 24th, 2007

Originally written for my Dad!

The proof that I am not obsessed alone with slightly psycho violent thrillers comes in the form of the gem that is The Notebook. Everyone needs to see a good romantic film once in a while and The Notebook ticks every box you could possibly need ticking. In my opinion, some good words to describe it are: delightful, heart-warming, lovely, moving.

Somehow, I find as I am writing this, however, that these words alone do not do The Notebook justice. It's a bit more than just a love-story. It's deep and thoughtful and adorable. And I really hate cheesiness in bucket loads but The Notebook is much more classy than that.

Based on a novel, the movie is a tale told by an old man to an old woman in a nursing home about two young lovers who fall madly for one another and are eventually driven apart by the girl's wealth-obsessed mother. They meet again years later, and the girl is forced to make a difficult decision based on her first love. My synopsis is very vague as the film is too good to give too much away, but a fantastic twist ends the story perfectly.

Set in the 1940's, it's also a voyeur's heaven and the whole style of the film is completely 'charming.' Many critics of both the book and film have called this 'one of the greatest love stories of recent years' and I embrace this description full oft.

However, what with you being a man, I'm willing to accept that you may feel The Notebook is just Titanic without the ship sinking and you may live in constant fear of what your 'ard, male pals will think of you if they ever discover you've seen it. Nonetheless, for me, watch it in secret and tell me how amazing you thought it was!
